IAPWS Fellows Levelt Sengers and Wagner Honored with Major Awards

Two longtime IAPWS participants have recently won major awards for their scientific work. In both cases, IAPWS-related work was prominently mentioned in the award citations.

In February 2003, at a ceremony in Paris, Dr. Johanna M.H. Levelt Sengers of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (USA) received a L'OREAL-UNESCO Award. This award was presented to five women from five different continents, honoring major contributions to the progress of science for the betterment of humanity. More information on the award is at this website:

Dr. Levelt Sengers was honored for her work on the thermodynamic behavior of pure fluids and mixtures near critical points. Much of this work has focused on aqueous systems, and has been done in the international context of IAPWS. Dr. Levelt Sengers has been involved in IAPWS for over 30 years, serving as its President in 1991 and 1992, and was named an IAPWS Fellow in 1994. She is also a member of the U.S. National Academy of Science and National Academy of Engineering.

In June 2003, at the 15th Symposium on Thermophysical Properties in Boulder, Colorado, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Wagner of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany) received the Yeram S. Touloukian Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This prestigious award, given every three years, recognizes outstanding achievements in research on thermophysical properties.

Professor Wagner was recognized both for his outstanding experimental work in the measurement of fluid thermophysical properties and for his development and application of optimization techniques for producing reference-quality equations of state for pure fluids. The citation made specific mention of his development of the recent IAPWS standard formulations for the thermodynamic properties of water and steam. Prof. Wagner has been involved in IAPWS for many years, and was named an IAPWS Fellow in 1998.

Several previous recipients of the Touloukian Award have also been associated with IAPWS; these include IAPWS Fellows Prof. Jan Sengers of the USA, Prof. Akira Nagashima of Japan, and the late Prof. Joseph Kestin of the USA.
